The Minor Theatre, a historic cinema in Arcata, CA, created Friday Night Flicks—a free outdoor movie series at the Arcata Ballpark—to give back to the community and reignite the spirit of classic open-air cinema. To support the event’s success, they needed eye-catching flyers that would capture the magic of the experience and drive local attendance.

As a freelance designer, I worked closely with their team to design promotional flyers that celebrated both the nostalgia of outdoor movies and the vibrant energy of community gatherings.

The Minor Theatre team needed flyers that could:

• Visually capture the nostalgic charm of outdoor movie screenings
• Clearly communicate event details like dates, location, and admission
• Appeal to families and the broader community across all age groups
• Create excitement and anticipation leading up to the event

The flyers had to balance classic design elements with a fresh, modern feel that would resonate with both longtime residents and new attendees.

I developed a series of flyer designs for the 2018 and 2019 events that featured:

• Vibrant, high-energy visuals evoking the joy of summer evenings at the ballpark
• Clear, structured layouts to ensure event information was easy to find at a glance
• A blend of vintage and modern design cues, honoring the theater’s rich history while feeling contemporary and inviting
• Optimized print-ready formats for widespread distribution across Arcata and neighboring communities

Each year’s flyer built on the previous success, maintaining brand consistency while introducing small creative evolutions to keep the visuals fresh.

The flyer designs helped Minor Theatre:
